#386: Build the Iambic "pressure" paddle from VK3IL
This short video presents the VK3IL Pressure Paddle - a lightweight portable paddle for your amateur radio's iambic keyer (for CW / Morse Code). This paddle is perfect for the portable POTA and SOTA operator, as it is small and uses no moving parts. The author's blog page for this project can be found here:

#385: How to quickly tune the Penntek TR-45L Z-match tuner
Переглядів 4,4 тис.Місяць тому
This short video shows how to quickly adjust the Z-match tuner in the Penntek TR-45L by slightly "overshooting" the null which each knob adjustment. Of course, you want to finish up with the deepest null possible (little to now REV power deflection). This technique helps you get close to this point quickly - then finish up at the lowest possible REV power.
#384: What is the bandwidth of a CW / Morse code signal? (as a function of speed and rise/fall time)
Переглядів 14 тис.2 місяці тому
The occupied bandwidth (OBW) of a CW / Morse code signal is primarily dependent upon the keying speed (Words per minute / WPM) and the rise/fall time of the RF envelope. Radios and operator practice give you control over the WPM, but not many radios give you control over the RF rise and fall time (which can have a major effect). This video shows measurements of the Occupied BW at various keyer ...

    I have question to your last section. Where you added voltage to LPF output (VcoIN) and the PLL compensated for that by varying the phase. I understand that it should happen for the transient time of the loop. But the should the PLL compensated for this additional voltage offset that you have added by decreasing its PD output and then bring the PLL to a lock. Why does your phase shifted waveform look so stable. I was imagining more of a jitter.

    • @FaheemAhmad32
      @FaheemAhmad32 День тому

      Got it to work. So instead of what you did where you just added a pull resistor to yank on the LPF output. What I was trying to do is take the LPF output through a summing amplifier where I am subtracting the V(LPF)-V(yank) and then feeding it back to the VCOin. That wasn't working. So instead I connected the LPF out to VCOin back. And just added V(yank) through a resistor on VCOin and it worked as your demonstration. So basically what I need to do is a current source instead of voltage source for my Yank signal.

    So does the NanoVNA connect to the tuner and then the tuner connects to the antenna? Presumably once you have it all tuned to the frequency you want to work (as per the video) you disconnect the NanoVNA from the tuner & connect the transceiver to the tuner. Great explanation as it makes it all look so simple.

    • @w2aew

      Yes, the NanoVNA is taking the place of the transceiver for the purposes of adjusting the tuner.

    What happens to the demodulated signal if you add a bandpass filter (presumably at the IF) setting the bandwidth to something like 200hz. Would this effectively round off the rise and fall time making it more like a sine wave than a square wave?

    • @w2aew
      @w2aew 8 днів тому

      It will slow the edges - but making a narrow BPF at the RF frequencies would be difficult. It would be best to do it at an IF and then upconvert to the RF output.

    Hi Alan, thank you for such amazing video, as usual. I always wondered how the "common mode choke" only applies impedance to the coax shield and not the core. I feel like it really makes sense on a balanced transmission line, but when it is applied to a coax, it really doesn't make too much sense to me. (I admit maybe I am just not understanding this properly.) Perhaps a video about common mode choke and how it works on coax (+/- how to measure it??) would be great. Pil VA3GPJ

    For those struggling to get DfuSeDemo to recognise the NanoVNA-H in Windows 10. Connect NanoVNA to PC in DFU mode then find the driver "STM32 Bootloader" in device manager right click on it to select "update driver". Choose 'Browse my computer for drivers' and navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\STMicroelectronics\Software\DfuSe v3.0.6\ (click on include sub-folders in the searching for drivers) then select 'let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer'. You'll see two options; ' STM Device in DFU Mode' and 'STM32 Bootloader' select 'STM Device in DFU Mode' to load this driver. In Device Manager you'll see 'STM Device in DFU Mode' instead of the 'STM32 Bootloader'. You'll find that DfuSeDemo will now recognise your NanoVNA-H. Or at least this worked for me.
